Pedestrian and bicycle bridge in Mechtenberg

An interesting pedestrian and bicycle bridge was built in the nature park Mechtenberg near Gelsenkirchen, designed by architect Frei Otto.
Massive rods are being positioned fan-shapedly, combined with special knot points, thus taking care of the stability of the bridge.
X-TEND stainless steel cable mesh was installed as a balustrade in-fill, playing its role almost imperceptibly, semi-transparent and in harmony with the bridge’s visuality.
On a length of 103 metres, X-TEND functions as a secure fall protection while stepping back visually in relation to the dominant rod combination of the bridge’s structure.
The steelworks was done by M/s. Heinrich Walter Bau Eiffage Group, Borken, and Carl Stahl installed the X-TEND mesh by using special fixation elements for the mesh’s border cables.
